The Pendulum

TASOS LEIVADITIS

Stories | 2026

This is the first English translation of Tasos Leivaditis’ short story collection, published originally in Greek in 1966 as Το εκκρεμές. The book features nine stories, with an unnamed protagonist in each who seeks meaning and connection, or even a small friendly gesture, only to be met with indifference and humiliation, precipitating his downward self-destructive spiral.

In his review of the book, the critic Dimitris Raftopoulos stated:

The Pendulum by Tasos Leivaditis is a radical book of our times, a book of extraordinary affliction and penetration. Its representativeness does not lie in a vision of some unified whole, but in its depiction of the disintegration of culture and the release of internal infernal powers breaking up all bonds with social life. A solitary individual, torn apart by the phantasms of his existential agony, spins round and convulses hideously without the faintest possibility of escape.” (Επιθεώρηση Τέχνης, Cultural Review, February 1967)
